What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that corrects age-related changes of the upper and lower eyelids

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that corrects age-related changes of the upper and lower eyelids (upper and lower blepharoplasty). During upper blepharoplasty, and incision is made in the eyelid crease, which is not visible when the eyelids are open, and excess skin excised.

In addition, depending on the patient, some additional fat around the eye is removed, although it is important to remove only the true excess fat. Frown lines can also be improved by weakening the corrugator muscles through the same incision (a technique sometimes referred to as “surgical BOTOXВ®”).

Eyelid asymmetry and droopy eyelids can also be addressed if necessary. For the lower eyelid, an incision is made inside the eyelid (conjuctival) or externally to remove and re-drape excess fat (eyelid “bags”).

If necessary, the muscle supporting the lower eyelid can be tightened. Finally, if there is excess skin, and external incision is required just below the eyelashes, where it is well hidden, and the excess skin resected.

Many people choose to have upper and lower blepharoplasty performed at the same time but they can easily be done individually. (Thomas A. Mustoe, MD, FACS, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

Most often referred to as an “eyelid lift”, Blepharoplasty is the generic name given to surgery that involves the removal of eyelid skin and/or fat.

What is a blepharoplasty operation

In some cases fat transfer to the eyelid or re-arrangement of eyelid fat is performed during Blepharoplasty. In essence Blepharoplasty should be thought of as a procedure that can be made up of a single or multiple surgical procedures to rejuvenate the eyelids. (Adam J. Cohen, MD, Skokie Oculoplastic Surgeon)

What is a Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty (eyelift) is a surgical procedure for removing excess fat from the upper and lower eyelid fat pads. There are two upper fat pads and 3 lower fat pads of each eye. This procedure will also remove excess skin or laxity of the upper eyelids and lower eyelids if needed. The removal of excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids will give your eyes a brighter and more youthful appearance and alleviate that tired look. In some cases it will also improve your vision. The lower blepharoplasty will remove puffiness and can be used to tighten the lower eye muscle if indicated. (Paul Vitenas, Jr., MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)

What is a blepharoplasty procedure

Either for the upper OR for the lower eyelids, blepharoplasty refers to the removal of excess fat and/or excess skin to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyelids. (Lawrence Kass, MD, Saint Petersburg Oculoplastic Surgeon)

Blepharoplasty – What it is and what it does

Blepharoplasty surgery, often referred to as an eyelift, removes excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids to give the patient a more refreshed, rested, and youthful look. The risk is very slight with a board certified plastic surgeon who is highly skilled and performs a large number of these operations since the eye fat removal is done through a tiny incision inside the eyelid. A special protective shield is in place over the eyeball throughout the surgery.

Most of the surgery is done on the outside of the eye. However, be certain to discuss your reasons for wanting an eyelift with your plastic surgeon.

In some cases, instead of reducing the amount of skin covering the eye, sometimes the most natural way to treat sagging upper eyelids is to raise the brow. See my browlift video to learn more. (Ricardo L. Rodriguez, MD, Baltimore Plastic Surgeon)

What is a Blepharoplasty – What Does It Do?

Simply put, the goal of blepharoplasty is to make your eyes look more refreshed. In the upper eyelid, this requires removing the droopy skin between your upper lashes and brow, so that your upper eyelid skin is visible even with your eyes open. In the lower lid, droopy skin can also be removed along with fat bulges. The end result is tighter, less crepe skin and flat contours. (Anand D. Patel, MD, Brookfield Facial Plastic Surgeon)
