Blepharoplasty recovery timeline

Most patients are able to return to work in 7-10 days after undergoing eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. This recovery time can be even shorter if only upper eyelids are addressed. (Frank Agullo, MD, El Paso Plastic Surgeon)

Eyelid surgery recovery can be quick

Generally no more than 2 weeks is required for return to work after cosmetic eyelid surgery. Though most patients find it hard to believe cosmetic eyelid surgery or Blephroplasty has a virtually painless recovery.

Therefore, from the standpoint of pain and discomfort most patients can physically return to a sedentary office occupation certainly within a few days of surgery. In addition, the surgical sutures are removed between the 3rd to 5th day post-op.

The wild card is the almost certain bruising that accompanies the surgery. Usually bruising is at first purple and ultimately fades to green and then yellow. The purple phase is almost impossible to hide with makeup but the other two can be.

If you do not want to face people at work with signs of having had surgery then you will have to wait to be able to apply makeup effectively or for your bruising to completely resolve. Usually the green and yellow develops in the second week after surgery. Therefore, there is no medical need to take more then a few days off from work.

If you do not want to explain the source of your bruising then you will have to wait until camouflage will work. This will usually occur within the 2 week window you have to recover from the surgery. (David A. Ross, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)

I think 2 weeks is perfectly adequate for eyelid surgery recovery. Eyelid recovery is generally painless, and most bruising will be mild to absent by 2 weeks, except in very extreme cases. Most swelling will also be gone.

Although some traces of swelling may remain for a few weeks more, they are usually very mild. If you have laser or chemical lower eyelid peels at the same time, you may still have some (easily covered) lower eyelid pinkness at the two week point. Eyelid Surgery Recovery – 2 Weeks Is Plenty

During the first week, most of the swelling and bruising will subside. At the end of this week, all sutures will be removed. Shortly after, makeup my be applied to hide any residual bruising. No heavy exercise for four weeks is best. (Anand D. Patel, MD, Brookfield Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Two weeks usually enough for blepharoplasty recovery

Recovery time is major concern for most patients. It really depends on what you mean by recovery. After eyelid surgery most patients can do day to day activities quite readily in 1 week. They may not however want to be face to face with friends, or co-workers until all the bruising and swelling is completely gone. Two weeks is typically sufficient for bruising and swelling to improve significantly. (Thomas Buonassisi, MD, Vancouver Facial Plastic Surgeon)

We typically ask our patients to request between 1-2 weeks off work in order to essentially insure that they will be ready for work without any visible signs of surgery.

Most patients are ready sooner, however, individual variability does exist so it is safer to err on the longer recovery period to avoid stress and potential conflict.  (Amir M. Karam, MD, San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeon)

2 weeks should be sufficient – I’ve had patients go back to work the next day with sunglasses. Most people do not complain of much pain after the first day. Bruising peaks in 2-3 days and is usually what prevents people from going outside – most people opt to wear sunglasses to hide the bruising as it resolves. Recovery from eyelid surgery

Recovery from eyelid surgery can vary but, in general, most are able to return to work in seven to ten days.

There may be a bit of residual bruising but that can be covered with some foundation and some make-up. (Talmage J. Raine, MD, FACS, Champaign Plastic Surgeon)
