Statement: Dr. Mark Karolak has been a facial plastic surgeon in Wall Township, New Jersey for over a decade. Board certified in both otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery, he has performed over 3,000 facelifts under local anesthesia, as well as thousands of other facial cosmetic procedures, including neck lifts, eyelid surgery, fat transfer, facial sculpting, Botox, Juvéderm, Restylane, and laser skin resurfacing.

Dr. Karolak’s practice is proudly dedicated to natural-looking facial plastic surgery results without general anesthesia. By treating the underlying components of aging, his goal is to recapture the way his patients once looked, staying true to their personal identity.

“Family, friends, and even strangers should be complimenting my patients’ natural beauty, not their facial plastic surgery,” says Dr. Karolak. “My patients know that my focus is on doing the right procedure, at the right time, for the right reason. It takes a lot to trust someone with your face, so I never take for granted what a privilege it is to be a part of the lives and journeys of so many.”

A New Jersey native, Dr. Karolak received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Rutgers College, where he was in the prestigious Henry Rutgers Scholar Program, focusing on research in neuroscience.

Dr. Karolak earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rowan University Osteopathic Medical School) in Stratford. He went on to complete a otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Healthcare System (now RWJ Barnabas Health) in New Jersey, which included training in head and neck surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. During his training, he was selected as resident of the year and chief resident in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology.

A RealSelf Top Doctor, Dr. Karolak’s work has been featured on Bravo TV, E! News, and in People Magazine.
Dr. Karolak is a fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Facial rejuvenation is a way to help restore and repair the components that contribute to each patient's unique aging pattern. The three components include loss of skin elasticity, loss of volume (bone and fat), and muscle looseness. A facelift will help address the muscle looseness and excess skin. Fat transfer or fillers will help restore volume.  A surgeon who performs fat transfer on a regular basis will know whether an "overfill" technique or a "treat to visible improvement" approa...

Facial Rejuvenation: Suggestions
Aug 14, 2019
I think that you are on the right track. You are getting a lot of good feedback here from plenty of excellent surgeons. It will get overwhelming at some point. Use this as a place to start. I think that you will find it helpful to see 3 surgeons for a consultation, or more if needed. You will find that the terminology and types of procedures that are being performed will vary based on the technique each surgeon uses and their experience. After seeing thousands of patients in consultation, I...
When can I eat pizza-type foods after mid face and neck lift?
Facelift: Diet
Mar 9, 2019
I allow my patients to eat whatever they feel comfortable chewing after a facelift. Most patients do best with soft foods immediately after the procedure. Food that is high in salt can increase and prolong swelling.  Speak to your surgeon to see what he or she recommends.
Is silicon gel for facelift post-op a waste of time if planning to do Fraxel?
Facelift: Silicone gel for scars
Mar 9, 2019
Always follow the instructions of the surgeon who performed your procedure. You trusted them enough to choose them, it is important that you trust them enough to get you through recovery. Hopefully, your surgeon has a lot of experience in these procedures. He or she should be your best guide through the healing time. Silicone gel is helpful for patients who develop more scar tissue than normal or for thickened scar tissue. It helps soften the scars by trapping moisture. Usually, it is ...
Have you ever heard of stitches not being absorbed by the body?
Facelift: Sutures
Mar 9, 2019
Absorbable sutures will be gone by one year, more likely sooner depending on the type and thickness of the suture. If a surgeon uses permanent sutures for muscle tightening under the skin, those sutures can get pushed out of the body even many years after the procedure.
Doctor made the facelift incision in front of my ears. Will it be more visible than an incision
Facelift: Incisions
Mar 9, 2019
There are a variety of incision locations and techniques that are used for facelifts. Each surgeon knows what works best in their hands. As a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in facelifts, I vary my incision placement based on what I feel will heal best in each patient. It is not always necessary to hide the incision in the ear canal.  This is something that should be discussed during the initial consult and confirmed prior to surgery. Surgeons who perform these procedures on a daily...

Facelift: Healing
Mar 9, 2019
Without before/after pictures and an in person exam, it is difficult to determine. Swelling and bruising vary from patient to patient. I find that in most patients, it peaks around day 3 or 4. It’s normal to have more bruising or swelling on one side than the other. Lumps and bumps are normal and will usually improve over the course of 1-2 weeks. I find that on average 70-80% of the signs of surgery improve in the first week and 90% by the second week.  The face will still feel firm an...

Is it possible to raise the lower eyelids by 2-3 mm via a midface lift?
Midface lift to raise lower lids
Mar 9, 2019
Most likely some form of lower lid surgery that “tightens the lower lid” will be required if you have what is called “ectropion”. A facelift may help in some ways cosmetically, especially when combined with fat transfer. You will have to be seen in person to answer this.
When do you wear a chin strap/neck support after a facelift? Can they be purchased on Amazon?
Facelift: Headwrap
Mar 9, 2019
What you will find is that you are going to get very different answers to this question depending on what each surgeon finds that works best for their own patients. Some surgeons make their patients wear a wrap for one month, while other surgeons don’t have them wear one at all. For my patients, I require that they wear a special head wrap that I put on them for 2 days. I see them the next day, take it off for them, and put a new one on. They take that off the following day, shower, and the...
Can I have a facelift with sleep apnea?
Facelift - Mild Sleep Apnea
Mar 8, 2019
Anytime there are health problems, it’s best to coordinate care and decision making with your primary care physician or medical specialist as well as your surgeon. There have been significant advances in surgical techniques over the past 10-15 years that have made it possible and safer for patients with certain medical conditions to undergo a facelift. Facelifts can be performed safely and comfortably under local anesthesia. I have found that physicians are more likely to support and medical...
Can I have my skin tightened under the neck without redoing the facelift?
Neck Lift vs Facelift
Mar 7, 2019
Options can range from a lateral neck lift with additional skin removal to a lower facelift tuck. It will depend on what your surgeon sees at your visit. In your case, it appears as though more skin removal after muscle tightening may be helpful in getting you closer to your goal.
Best treatment for nasolabial folds?
Folds vs Wrinkles
Dec 12, 2018
Folds in the face are different than wrinkles. Folds are meant to be there, and have been present since childhood. Wrinkles appear with aging. Aging does contribute to deepening folds when muscles lose the ability to stay tight and start to sag over the fold making it appear deeper. In the early and moderate stages, deepening folds can be treated and still look natural by softening (not eliminating) them with HA fillers or fat. When aging advances and the muscles of the face continue to shif...

Facelift: Healing
Nov 8, 2018
In general, lumps, bumps, and a firm texture are fairly common in the healing phases of a facelift. On average, I find that most of the visible signs of surgery have resolved in the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. This may vary based on patient medical issues, the type of facelift performed, and how well patients follow the pre and post-op instructions. The healing that takes place underneath the skin can take up to a year.  Most often, the firm texture is resolved around 3-4 month...
What Can I Do About my Very Uneven Face?
Facial Symmetry
Oct 9, 2018
Nobody's face is symmetric. Symmetry is not possible. The goal of any facial rejuvenation is balance.  This can be achieved by using fillers/fat transfer, surgery (facelift, rhinoplasty, eyelid lift, brow lift, etc), and neuromodulators in a way that is respectful to normal aging patterns. Even in most cases of significant asymmetry, such as facial paralysis/bell's palsy, improvement can be achieved by restoring balance to the face. The best way to develop a realistic appreciation for what...
