I recently developed a strange crease or fatty area under my left eye. I'm 49 and never had any wr
Wrinkle beneath the eye
Feb 19, 2014
From the photo, it looks like this area is either swelling, or edema. These are often called festoons. This is most likely the case if the swollen area is worse in the morning or if you sleep on your left side. It could also be fat. In either respect, creams are probably not going to be helpful. The lower lids are a common place to collect extracellular fluid. I would first recommend seeing your primary care doctor to see if you have any thyroid...
How Do I Get Rid of Eye Bags?
Lower lid bags - tired looking eyes
Feb 19, 2014
The most common cause of lower eyelid bags is the forward migration of fat in the lower eyelid or orbit. The fat can be sculpted and redistributed to provide a smoother contour to the lower lid. This procedure is called a lower lid blepharoplasty or eyelid lift. If there is wrinkling of the skin, a pinch of skin can be removed to improve this. If the skin is not wrinkled, the surgery can be performed from the inside of the eyelid eliminating a skin incision. ...
Under-eye Bags and Darkness: Can it be Corrected?
Dark bags underneath eyes
Feb 19, 2014
The dark area underneath your eyes appear to be located more towards your nasal lower lid, as opposed to your lateral lower lid. This area is called the "tear trough deformity" and is partially due to the very thin skin in this area. The skin is so thin that the muscle underneath the skin casts a dark hue. Based on your photo, which is quite dark, I think filler in this area is your best bet. I have not had much success with creams over the years. A tinted...
I Want to Get Rid of Horizontal Forehead Crease Lines Without Scars Since I Have a High Hairline.
Forehead lift in a patient with a high hair line
Jun 5, 2013
You are correct that neurotoxins such as botox are temporary corrections for horizontal forehead lines. The best surgical option for forehead rejuvination, in a person with a high hairline, is a Tricophytic Forehead lift. In this procedure, the incision is made at the junction where the forehead meets the hair. It offers wrinkle reduction, eyebrow elevation and does NOT raise the hairline. A disadvantage is the possibility of an incision scar. Endoscopic...
Browlift and Mid Facelift with Possible Chin Implant- when Can I Return to Work and Look Ok?
Healing time after facelift
Jun 5, 2013
A good rule of thumb is that approximately 70-80% of the bruising and swelling will go away in the first 2 - 3 weeks. The remaining 20 - 30% will resolve over many months. This is a general statment and you may heal quicker or slower. In general, the more time you can take off work to heal, the better of you are. I think 14 days may be the best case scenario.
Wonder About Lower Eye Lift for Hallows and Tear Throughs?
Tear Trough
May 17, 2013
It appears that your tear troughs are mild. This is treated very well, and with minimal risk, by a Hyaluronidase filler such as Juviderm or Restylane. This will replace some of the volume loss and improve the tear trough. Dark circles beneath the eyes, beyond the region of the tear rough, are more difficult to treat. Often, for a patient your age, make up is a better alternative to surgery. It is hard to give expert advise from a photo, so I would recommend...
When Has Enough Time Passed for Revisional Surgery from a Lower Blepharoplasty?
Lower lid droop after lower lid blepharoplasty
Apr 19, 2013
I agree that three weeks is too early for a revision in most cases. Messaging the lower lid up may speed the resolution. Also, it is quite common for one side to be significantly more swollen than the other. Tell your surgeon your concerns and ask questions. aqqother option would be to ask your surgeon to obtain a second opinion.
Can Dog Ear on the Outer Corner of Eye from Bleph Heal on Its Own or Will I Need a Revision?
Dog ear deformity after blepharoplasty
Apr 19, 2013
A dog ear can resolve on its own. If it is a mild amount of residual skin, I recommend waiting three months to see if it resloves. If still present beyond three months, it can be managed surgically by either removing more eyelid skin or doing a brow lift. This can be a difficult decision and should be discussed with your surgeon.
Staples and Brow Lift?
Brow lifting and staples
Apr 19, 2013
The staples were removed at the appropriate time. I think what you are describing is natural healing due to the tension and inherent trauma of the surgery. It should slowly resolve over months. I would encourage you not to touch the area too much.
The Hollywood Blepharoplasty?
Modern Blepharoplasty
Apr 19, 2013
This is a great question. As the concepts of aesthtic surgery have evolved, so have the surgical techniques. If you look at younger people, they tend to have more volume in their faces. Volumetric analysis has shown that one loses volume as one ages, and thus to try and restore a youthful appearance we add volume with fillers. We also try and preserve volume when appropriate with surgery. The goal of aesthetic surgery is to make the patient look rejuvinated, not...
Surgery to GET Puffy Eyes?
Dark Circles Under Eyes
Apr 15, 2013
For a younger person, hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero are excellent choices to reduce a sunken, dark lower lid appearance. Your natural swelling did this to some degree. At your age, I would not recommend any surgery. Good luck.
Best Way to Go About the Ptosis in Left Eye?
Eyelid Droop / Ptosis
Apr 15, 2013
Clearly your left upper lid is drooping or ptotic. However, your right upper lid may droop after the left lid is surgically raised. Your physician can elevate your left lid with an eye drop to see if your right upper lid droops. This will simulate what will happen after surgical correction of the left upper lid. The eyelid, or eyelids if need be, can be raised either from the inside of the eyelid without an incision, or through the skin. Both techniques should...
Why Do I Have a Bloodshot Eye and Pain in Eye 3 Days After Botox?
Botox Around The Eyes
Apr 11, 2013
This is most likely not do to the Botox toxin itself. However, if the Botox affects the muscles that close the eyes, the eyes can get dry and secondarily red and irritated. This side affect can be minimized by using small amounts of botox around the eyes. It is less likely to occur when just used in the glabella or forehead. In either respect, I think your red eye should resolve in a timely manner.
Will I Have A Reaction to Restylane Under My Eyes or Not?
Restylane Under Eyes
Apr 11, 2013
Restylane is an excellent filler for underneath the eyes or the "tear trough". It can also be used to smooth the transition from the lower lid to the cheek. Allergic reactions are rare. The good news is that Restylane, and other hyaluronic acid fillers, can be reversed with the enzyme hyaluronidase. If you have had a previous allergic reaction to a Hyaluronic Acid filler, then I would avoid Restylane. If no histories of any allergies, it is probably safe...
My Eyelids Are Closing Because of Droopy Upper Lids and I Was Wondering if Medicare Will Pay Surge
Will insurance cover upper eyelid surgery?
Mar 9, 2013
Medicare and other insurances will cover upper eyelid ptosis repair and blepharoplasty if certain criterion are met. First, the margin of the upper lid needs to be a certain distance away from the center of the pupil, usually less than 2mm. Second, visual field testing must demonstrate significant visual field restriction due to the drooping lids. Finally, some insurance companies will also want to see photographs. An experienced oculoplastic surgeon should be able to...
