I typically recommend my patients who are nurses to take 4 weeks off work, of course this depends on the type of nursing practiced, but you should refrain from lifting for 4 weeks.

Elective procedures are best performed on healthy individuals. Your cardiologist would require that you are cleared for the procedure, and that you can safely stop taking blood thinning medications for a period prior to your surgery. You should certainly follow up with your surgeon to ensure that the bloatedness you are experiencing isn't a fluid collection (seroma). Otherwise a minor weight gain may be related to lack of activity during your recovery period. Your surgeon may suggest that you follow up with your family doctor to rule out causes unrelated to your surgery.
