Dr. Prasad, New York, New York Reducing Scleral Show From Lower Eyelid Retraction
When lower eyelid surgery complications bring down the eyelids, the often expose more of the sclera or the white of the eyes, also called scleral show. Lower eyelid retraction is commonly caused by unnecessary removal of lower eyelid skin, and is more likely to be caused by the transcutaneous approach of lower eyelid surgery where the incision made to remove fat that causes eye bags can also compromise lower eyelid support anatomy. It is also important to note that the transcutaneous approach is not recommended on darker skinned patients, as the external incision is more likely to cause scarring in darker skinned patients. Raising the lower eyelids through specialized anchoring and grafting by eyelid specialists can reduce scleral show, and give eyes a more expressive look, rather than the sad weariness of pulled down eyelids.
